Cotton deliveries in Zimbabwe grew to 116,052 tonnes in 2021, up from 82,479 tonnes in 2020, thanks to government subsidies and greater support for farmers, according to a representative from the country's largest cotton firm. According to Jacqueline Dube, Cotton Company of Zimbabwe (Cottco) acting company secretary, the Zimbabwean government pledged last year to pay an additional 22 Zimbabwe dollars (20 US cents) per kilogram provided by farmers as a subsidy payment to guarantee cotton growing remained sustainable.

In the current 2020/21 season, over 521 000 farmers received inputs through the Presidential Inputs Scheme.

$66 paid to cotton farmers

Government paid $66 million to cotton farmers as part of commitment to clear the $1,5 billion oustanding payment for cotton deliveries made in 2020.

Cotton Pfumvudza pack approved

Pertaining to the Presidential Cotton Programme, Cabinet approved  cotton ”Pfumvudza” pack comprising 6kg seed, 80kg basal fertiliser, 40kg top dressing and the prerequisite herbicides and chemicals reducing the seed allocation from 20kg seed to match fertilizers provided.

324,517 cotton growers received inputs under the government's Free Input Scheme.

Nearly 325 000 cotton growers received inputs under the Government’s Free Inputs Scheme meant to help vulnerable communities and prop up production. The Cotton Company of Zimbabwe, which is administering the programme said 324 517 farmers had already received some inputs out of the targeted 400 000 farmers. The package of the inputs include seed, basal and top dressing fertilisers as well as chemicals.
