Bubi-Lupane Irrigation Scheme Impacts Lives

The Bubi-Lupane irrigation scheme was launched on December 23 as a pilot project for an integrated business model that will be replicated across all provinces as part of the national food security strategy, in which farmers partner with Arda in a well-managed operation in exchange for dividends and a portion of the crop for personal consumption.

The Agriculture and Food Systems Transformation Strategy was initiated during the tenure of the late National Hero and former Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement Minister Perrance Shiri.

Launching the strategy at the 8th annual agribusiness conference hosted by the National Economic Consultative Forum and the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society, President Mnangagwa said the Strategy and plans were a bold statement of the legacy of the late Minister Shiri and was a constant reminder to the players in the agriculture sector to be more dedicated in the process of growing the economy.

He said the success of the Agriculture and Food systems Transformation Strategy would heavily depend on a co-ordinated and multi sectoral approach.

Setting up of Maize Producer Prices for the 2020/21 marketing season

Goverment has reviewed upwards the producer prices for maize, traditional grains and soyabeans for the 2020/21 marketing season with the effect from April 1, 2020. The new price for maize was pegged at $12,329, traditional grains at $12,865 while the soyabeans price will be $17,211 per metric tonne.

AT least 920 smallholder farmers in Midlands have benefited from Government’s free tillage programme.  The programme was launched in December 2019 in Lower Gweru and is being implemented by the District Development Fund (DDF) with 460,5ha being tilled to date.

Zimbabwe and China Lesso Group yesterday signed an agricultural cooperation agreement under which 12,800 hectares will be put under irrigation for the production of over 60 000 tonnes of maize each season.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Mr Bwenje Clemence Taderera, the acting chief director (for) strategic planning and business development in the Ministry of Agriculture and Mr Yi Biao Luo, the general manager of China Lesso Group.

Planting 10 million trees in Chinhoyi, Mashonaland West Province to aid the Tobacco Industry.

President Mnangagwa commissioned a $600 million (US$40 million) Kilimanjaro Sugar Cane project which is expected to create 2 000 jobs in the next 12 months. ln a joint venture between Tongaat Huletts, Government and local financial institutions, the Hippo Valley Estates project will see 4 000 hectares of virgin land being turned into massive sugar plantations for allocation to indigenous farmers on a cost recovery basis.

Resolution of a farm ownership dispute in Chipinge

A top Chipinge coffee farmer and owner of Farfell Estates, Mr Richard Le Vieux, has thanked President Mnangagwa for resolving the ownership dispute of a portion of the farm, a development that has enabled exports of the crop and other produce to continue.
