Under the Presidential Rural Development Programme, a total of 8 drilling rigs have been distributed, one to each of the rural provinces. An additional 30 rigs are expected in September 2022. Twenty-five thousand households have received a total of 1 250 000 sweet potato vines while 2.3 million vegetable combos were distributed to 2.3 million households. A total of 10 000 fruit trees were distributed to 1 000 households, out of a target exceeding 18 million fruit trees, while one village nutrition garden was established in Mangwe District in Matabeleland South Province. One hundred and sixty boreholes have been drilled in 2022

Dam Rehabilitation of the Gariya dam wall in Tsholotsho, Matebeleland North Province was completed, while under Borehole Drilling, 144 boreholes were sited, 83 drilled and 28 installed. A total of 208 boreholes were rehabilitated, while 1 215 were maintained.

DDF has sunk a borehole at Bere Clinic, Mashava, Masvingo Province,after the area had gone for three months without supply of clean water. Zinwa Suction points were washed away due to the incessant rains resulting in the failure to supply water to residents

Treasury has released $46 million to the District Development Fund (DDF) to help drill 600 boreholes that will provide clean water for consumption and irrigation, especially in the country’s eight rural provinces, in line with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s recent directive.The exercise also involves rehabilitating hand-pumps to restore their efficiency and productivity. DDF director of water supplies and maintenance Mr Edwin Toriro told our Harare Bureau that the projects, which are being jointly undertaken with the Ministry of Health and Child Care, would be biased towards drought-prone areas.

Cabinet considered an update on the Public Works Programme and the DDF Borehole drilling programme, which was presented by the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs and Monitoring Implementation of Government Programmes. Cabinet expressed satisfaction over the progress in the programme, which has assumed urgency in view of the current drought situation. Implementation of the programme will alleviate the plight of the country’s citizens and livestock in areas most affected by the drought.
