At least 294 privately-owned buses and kombis recently cleared by the Central Mechanical and Equipment Department (CMED) will now join the Zupco franchise. CMED inspected 326 buses and kombis and 294 passed the test. In addition, 221 drivers were also tested and 197 of them passed. More kombi and bus owners are expected to bring their vehicles to CMED for tests as Zupco continues to accept applications. Under new Government policy, only Zupco and those franchised by Zupco can provide public transport.

President Mnangagwa commissioned 47 Zupco buses – the second batch of a 300-strong fleet – as Government continues to build a safe and reliable transport system in the country. In April, the Head of State commissioned 39 buses, while an additional 47 has just been cleared into the country. A further 500 buses from Belarus are also in the pipeline. Speaking at the commissioning of the buses in Harare, President Mnangagwa said the Government is committed to ease transport challenges in the country by availing reliable and affordable transport to the people in line with the Vision 2030.

The revival of the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (Zupco) has created jobs for more than 1,200 people and more drivers and conductors are set to be hired countrywide.

President Mnangagwa commissioned 39 of 300 buses which the government has secured as part of measures to ease the plight of commuters who are being ripped off by private operators. The 300 buses are part of an overall government policy to revamp the transport sector and introduce a mass transport system, with a further 500 buses from Belarus soon to be availed. The commissioning of the buses coincided with the launch of a computerised system that will be installed in the buses, designed by Dr Talon Garikayi, the director of Technology Transfer at the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT). The system can be used for issuing fuel, monitoring consumption, tracking, real-time financial reporting, among others.
