The Government of Zimbabwe, together with Agence Française de Développement (AFD), the French public development institution, launched a EUR-3-million project for the rehabilitation and development of the Great Zimbabwe World Heritage site in Masvingo Province, in the south-eastern part of Zimbabwe.

Financial services group Old Mutual Zimbabwe Limited opened the US$24,6 million Palm River Hotel in Victoria Falls, with chairperson Kumbirayi Katsande saying the industry was ripe for investment. The four-star facility, a world-class real estate gem on the shores of the Zambezi River, is a partnership between Old Mutual and Spencer Creek, an established tourism firm with significant interests in the industry. Other projects that were unveiled recently include Zambezi Boutique’s US$1 million investment, and Nkosi Guest Lodge — a multi-million-dollar facility. President Emmerson Mnangagwa early this month officially opened three new facilities in Victoria Falls where he reiterated that Zimbabwe was on target to achieve the US$5 billion tourism industry economy by 2025.

Cabinet approved the memorandum on the cooperation project between the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ) and the French Development Agency (AFD) on the improvements of infrastructure at the Great Zimbabwe World Heritage Site. The project intends to improve the infrastructure at the Site as well as enhance capacity building, economic development, and cultural empowerment of the local communities.

Cabinet approved as follows: to restructure and realign the Forestry Commission  to perform its core function on the conservation and management of the country’s forestry reserve in contributing to the economic turnaround and the attainment of Vision 2030; that the Forestry Commission broadens community participation by setting up natural resource management committees in rural communities in collaboration with rural district councils; that, in line with the New Dispensation’s Devolution policy, each province develops a Natural Resources Development Plan, which entails sound management of forestry and wildlife resources for effective contribution to economic growth; and that the Forestry Commission undertakes effective marketing as well as competitive pricing of its tourism facilities in order to enhance its financial performance.

The 20-year contract awarded to African Parks - its first foray into the country -  is considered all the more remarkable by conservationists who had thought it highly unlikely that the government of Zimbabwe would ever allow a foreign organisation to take control of its wildlife resources.

Zimbabwe-born Springbok prop, Tendai Mtawarira, has been named tourism ambassador for Destination Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) has said the main objective for the appointment is to increase tourism traffic into Destination Zimbabwe. This comes as the global trend in tourism calls for destinations to appoint tourism ambassadors as advocates for the destination offerings. Zimbabwe is bidding to lure an ambitious three million visitors by the end of 2019, having received 2,5 million visitors in 2018.
