ZIMBABWE and Botswana have upgraded their relations from a Joint Commission to Bi-National Commission in a move that will see the presidents of both nations meeting annually to digest important socio-political and economic matters. President Mnangagwa and Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi witnessed the signing of the Bi-National Commission by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Dr Sibusiso Moyo and Botswana’s International Affairs and Cooperation Minister, Dr Unity Dow, on Saturday on the sidelines of the just-ended 38th sadc summit held in Windoek, Namibia.

Rwanda has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Zimbabwe that will see the two countries cooperating and exchanging experiences from the extractive industries to develop their respective mining sectors, according to reports. Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board Minister Francis Gatare was in Harare where he signed the deal  on behalf of Rwanda while Zimbabwe’s Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando signed on behalf of his government.

President Mnangagwa met Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in a crucial engagement earmarked to strengthen bilateral ties between Zimbabwe and the world’s third largest economy. The two leaders met on the final day of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) summit. Briefing Zimbabwean journalists in Japan soon after the meeting, President Mnangagwa said the engagement with Prime Minister Abe was ‘fruitful’.

The 2019 Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 7), where Zimbabwe is expected to sign some memoranda of understanding with players in the Japanese economy and court investors from the Asian country, will kick-off on in Yokohama, Japan. One of the memoranda of understanding will be between Zimbabwe’s premier trade promotion body, ZimTrade, and JETHRO of Japan to be signed on the sidelines of the conference.

Zimbabwe's Special Envoy, Ambassador Simon Khaya Moyo yesterday met Mozambique President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi and delivered a special message from President Mnangagwa. Ambassador Khaya Moyo further discussed matters of “mutual interest” with President Nyusi. Ambassador Khaya Moyo has been on a tour of Southern Africa where he has also met with His Majesty, King Mswati III of eSwatini, Lesotho Prime Minister Dr Thomas Thabane and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. In all the instances, Ambassador Khaya Moyo delivered special messages from President Mnangagwa and held discussions on matters of mutual interest.

Electricity supplies are expected to improve significantly following a payment plan that was agreed on by Zimbabwe and South African power utility, Eskom, coupled with a US$2 million import facility through a local financial institution. This was said by Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa while addressing the media on the 27th Cabinet decision matrix in Harare. Furthermore, ZESA is now accessing 300MW during off-peak hours. This additional power is availed through the Southern African Power Pool Day Ahead Market under a US$2 million facility which was mobilised by the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company.

Zimbabwe and China signed three cooperation agreements focusing on the economy and social services, as the two all-weather friends take their relations to another level. The agreements were signed in Harare after marathon closed discussions between the Zimbabwe delegation headed by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Sibusiso Moyo, and the Chinese economic and trade delegation led by the Vice Minister of Commerce, Mr Qian Keming. In an interview after the signing ceremony, Minister Moyo said; “What was being signed here were basically three agreements. The first one, as you are aware, our cooperation between China and Zimbabwe is guided within eight principles and all eight initiatives, and these initiatives are the ones which guide the framework of cooperation, whether it is an industrial initiative or it is a technological initiative or it’s people-to-people initiative, (or) it is financial initiative.
